QLD: Nitro has a nose for gold
BRISBANE, Dec 15 AAP - A German Shepherd dog with a well-trained nose took three minutes to
sniff out a missing gold bracelet - after three men had failed despite an hour-long search.
The dog, named Nitro, was called in to Sanctuary Cove on the Gold Coast after the woman had
lost the jewellery at the resorts marine village over the weekend, patrol safety dog team
coordinator Craig Murray said.
Security staff were summoned to search for the bracelet but after an hour it was decided
that Nitro may have more success.
It took him three minutes to locate the bracelet, which had fallen more than 20cm under
rocks at the waters edge.
Mr Murray said Nitro was bred from imported bloodlines and one of four such patrol safety
dogs at the resort.
"I picked Nitro for his natural drives and instincts," Mr Murray said.
The dog, with millions more scent receptors than a human, had found the bracelet after
sniffing out the "scent fingerprint" of its owner, he said.
