NSW: On the spot fines should be decided by retailers: ARA

SYDNEY, Jan 10 AAP - Retailers, not police, should decide whether an on the spot fineor arrest was appropriate for shoplifters, the Australian Retailers Association (ARA)said today.

ARA policy director Stan Moore said retailers lost $2 billion nationally each yearand wanted the right to decide if an offender should be prosecuted.

His comments follow the release of plans by NSW Police to introduce on the spot finesfor nuisance and mischief crimes such as shoplifting.
